One big monarch spreads its wings inside a scalloped cream medallion, wings shaded pink to marigold, while smaller butterflies and folk daisies scatter across the field. This butterfly mahjong mat lives in a warm 70s palette of plum, coral and orange, wrapped in a wavy rickrack border and a purple frame. The whole thing has a hand-painted, flower-child softness.
Out on the table it feels sunny and unfussy. The cream center keeps tiles legible, and the purple edge pulls the eye outward to the butterflies. Guests smile at the center moth first, then find the little ones hiding in the corners, then settle into a surface that frames four hands with room to breathe.
The Art: Folk Butterfly Field
Symmetry runs top to bottom and side to side, with the largest butterfly centered and blossoms filling the negative space in even weight. Plum and coral warm against the pale ground; orange sunbursts add pop at top and bottom. Busier detail sits near the border, leaving the middle calm for discards.
