In front of a standard single sink, a 2 x 3 ft rug turned sideways covers your stance comfortably. If you have a double sink or a long stretch of counter where two people work side by side, step up to 2.6 x 3.9 ft. Along a kitchen island, a 3.3 x 5 ft rug placed lengthwise on the working side gives you a neat, defined zone, and it also works well down the middle of a wider galley kitchen.

The two larger sizes are for kitchens with open floor space. In a U-shaped kitchen, a 4 x 6 ft rug in the center ties the three counters together. Both quality levels use the same print and both have a non-slip backing. The difference is thickness and feel, and that matters more in a kitchen than in most rooms.

• Standard Level: a lightweight 5 mm rug with a shiny velvet surface that shows color and fine detail clearly. It has a faux leather non-slip backing. Because it sits low, it is the easier choice right in front of a dishwasher or oven door, and its flatter surface makes it the recommended option if a chair or stool with wheels rolls over it.

How to Care for Your Kitchen Rug

Most kitchen messes only need a quick spot clean. Act fast and blot rather than scrub.

• Vacuum on a low setting or take the rug outside and shake it out to remove crumbs and dust.
• Blot spills right away with a damp cloth, working from the outside of the spot toward the center. Do not rub, which pushes the spill deeper into the fibers.
• When the whole rug needs a refresh, hand wash it with cold water and a mild detergent, then let it air dry flat.
• This rug is hand wash only. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and tumble drying, and do not iron the printed surface.
• Rotate the rug occasionally so wear and daylight spread evenly, especially in front of the sink where you stand most.
• Your rug ships folded, so fold lines are normal at first. Lay it flat and the creases relax within a few days.

For greasy splashes near the stove, blot first with a dry paper towel to lift as much as you can, then follow with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent, and finish with a clean damp cloth. Let the spot dry fully before you walk on it again.
