How to Choose the Right Gaming Rug

A good gaming rug has to fit three things at once: the footprint of your setup, the way you use your chair and the look of the room. Work through them in that order and the right size and quality level usually becomes obvious.

Measure Your Setup, Not Just Your Chair

Start with a tape measure. For a desk setup, measure the width of the desk and then how far you roll back when you stand up or stretch, which is usually 3 to 4 feet from the desk edge. Your rug should cover that whole rolling zone so no wheel drops off the edge mid-match. A single-monitor desk with a standard gaming chair usually fits on a 2.6 x 3.9 ft rug, while wide desks, L-shaped desks and multi-monitor setups are happier on a 4 x 6 ft or 5 x 7 ft rug that runs under the desk as well as the chair.

Rolling Chairs and Floor Types

If you use a rolling chair, the surface matters as much as the size. The Standard Level is the one we recommend under a desk chair: its 5 mm velvet surface is flatter, so the wheels roll smoothly instead of sinking in, and its faux leather backing holds the rug in place when you push off. Use it on hard floors such as hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl or concrete. The Premium Level is thicker and plusher, which feels great underfoot but adds resistance for wheels, so save it for setups where you sit on a couch, a beanbag or the floor.

Console Corners and Living Room Game Rooms

A game room rug in front of a TV follows the same rules as any living room rug. Place it so at least the front legs of your sofa or gaming chairs rest on it, which visually connects the seating to the screen, and center it on the TV rather than the wall. In most rooms that means a 5 x 7 ft rug. Gaming Rug Size Guide

Most designs come in the five standard sizes below. A few designs stop at 4 x 6 ft, and shaped rugs have their own four sizes, explained under the table.

Room by room: under a desk chair, start at 2.6 x 3.9 ft and move up to 4 x 6 ft if you roll sideways between monitors, so all the wheels stay on the rug when you push back. Beside a bed, a 3.3 x 5 ft rug gives you a soft landing in the morning. In front of a sofa, a 5 x 7 ft rug lets the sofa's front legs rest on it while leaving about 18 to 24 inches of bare floor around the edges. In a dorm, a 4 x 6 ft rug usually covers the open floor between the bed and the desk.

Shaped rugs come in four sizes and are cut to the outline of the artwork, so their exact dimensions depend on the design: some are nearly square, others are wider or taller. Across the collection they range from about 2 x 3 ft (60 x 90 cm) at the smallest to about 5.2 x 5.9 ft (160 x 180 cm) at the largest, and the exact sizes for each design are listed on its product page.

Standard vs Premium: Picking Your Gaming Rug Quality

Both quality levels use the same artwork and the same print process. The choice comes down to how you will use the rug.

• Standard Level: a lightweight 5 mm rug with a shiny velvet surface that shows color and fine detail clearly. It has a faux leather non-slip backing and is the recommended choice under a desk chair, because the wheels roll smoothly over the flatter surface. It is the natural pick for PC setups and streaming desks.
• Premium Level: a softer, cushioned 7 mm rug with a plush surface that is comfortable to sit or lie on. It has a natural cotton anti-slip backing and suits bedrooms, living rooms, kids' rooms and console setups where you play from the couch or the floor.

If one rug has to do both jobs, go with the Standard Level so your chair keeps rolling freely.

Printing, Materials and Safety

Every rug is printed with HD sublimation, which bonds the ink into the fibers instead of leaving it on the surface, so the design will not crack or peel under chair wheels or foot traffic. The inks are UV-resistant, though it is still best to avoid long hours of direct sun. Reinforced stitched edges resist fraying and curling under a chair that crosses the same edge all day. The non-slip backing works on hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl, concrete and low-pile carpet. The inks are non-toxic and skin-safe, and the rugs are made for indoor use only.

How to Care for Your Gaming Rug

• Vacuum on a low setting or shake the rug out to remove crumbs and dust.
• Blot spills right away with a damp cloth instead of rubbing them into the fibers.
• For a deeper clean, hand wash with cold water and a mild detergent, then let the rug air dry flat.
• Skip bleach, harsh chemicals and tumble drying, and never iron the printed side.
• Rotate the rug occasionally so chair wear and sunlight are spread evenly.
• Your rug ships folded, so expect light creases at first; they relax within a few days once the rug lies flat.
