Psyduck stands on a flat stone at the edge of a garden pond, both hands pressed to its head and eyes wide open, while five orange koi circle lazily in the water below. This Pokemon poster plays its famous headache for gentle comedy inside a traditional Japanese garden, with a red cartouche and a smaller poem panel in the upper right. Each piece is made to order.
Funny and peaceful at once, it brings a smile to a hallway or kitchen and sits comfortably as wall art for living room shelves and gallery walls. Kids recognise the duck instantly. Adults tend to recognise the feeling.
The Artwork: Garden of Mild Panic
Bright red and gold maple leaves crowd the upper left, balanced on the right by a stand of green bamboo and drifting scroll-shaped clouds. A moss-grey stone lantern anchors the bottom left corner. The pond is painted in clear aqua washes, and each koi has its scales picked out in fine ink, swimming in different directions so the eye keeps moving. Psyduck's soft yellow body is the brightest, simplest shape in the picture, which is exactly why the joke lands. Of all the prints in this series, it is the most playful, with the fullest spread of autumn colour.
