Red-crowned cranes wheel around a great gold sky-ring at the center of this Japanese mahjong mat, red Mount Fuji rising at each corner beneath drifting clouds and cherry blossom. A tiny crane-and-Fuji roundel marks the very middle. A red and indigo border of gilded cranes and clouds frames the whole ukiyo-e scene.
On a table it makes a bold, auspicious statement. The pale sky center keeps tiles and racks clear, and the flying cranes draw every eye upward between hands. Guests notice the red Fuji peaks and the little center medallion.
The Art: Aka-Fuji and Cranes
Drawn in the manner of Japanese woodblock print, the design pairs flying red-crowned cranes with the "red Fuji" motif, cherry blossom and gold cloud bands over a soft graded sky. The busiest work sits in the corners and border; the central ring stays open for play.
