Frequently Asked Questions

The right size depends on your room and furniture layout:

Room SizeRecommended RugFurniture Placement
Small (10'×12')5' × 7' or 6' × 9'Front legs on rug
Medium (12'×14')8' × 10'Front legs or all on rug
Large (14'×18')9' × 12'All furniture on rug
Open Plan9' × 12' or largerDefine conversation area

Pro tip: Leave 12-18 inches of floor visible between rug edges and walls.

There are three accepted approaches: (1) All furniture legs on the rug—best for large rooms, creates a unified look; (2) Front legs only on the rug—most popular choice, works for most rooms; (3) All furniture off the rug—works for smaller accent rugs. The key is consistency—don't mix approaches with the main seating pieces.

Use furniture pads or coasters under heavy sofa and chair legs to distribute weight and prevent permanent indentations. Move furniture slightly every few months to prevent wear patterns. Our durable polyester pile is designed to resist crushing, but protection extends rug life.

Consider your lifestyle: Darker colors and patterns hide wear in high-traffic homes; lighter rugs open up smaller spaces. Pull accent colors from your sofa or art for cohesion. Neutral base colors (gray, beige, blue-gray) offer versatility if you change decor often.

Our rugs feature a non-slip synthetic leather backing that grips most floors without a pad. However, a quality rug pad can add benefits: extra cushioning for comfort, additional floor protection, noise reduction, and extended rug life. On very smooth floors, a pad is a worthwhile addition but not required.

Vacuum weekly to prevent dirt from settling into fibers—more often in high-traffic homes or with pets. Spot clean spills immediately. Machine wash the entire rug every 3-6 months depending on use. Rotate the rug 180° every few months for even wear.

About This Collection

Living Room Rugs

Living room rugs set the tone for the busiest room in your home, and ours are made for people who would rather look at a piece of art than a plain beige rectangle. The collection brings together more than 160 printed designs, from a curling ukiyo-e wave and Dutch Master portraits to Arts and Crafts botanicals, misty Japanese landscapes, Greek mythology and classic rock crests. Every living room rug is printed to order, so the design you choose is produced fresh for your home instead of being pulled from a warehouse shelf.

Rectangular designs come in five sizes, from a 2 x 3 ft accent up to a 5 x 7 ft centerpiece that sits in front of a sofa or anchors a reading corner. You pick between two quality levels: Standard, a lightweight 5 mm rug with a shiny velvet surface, or Premium, a cushioned 7 mm plush version that feels softer when you stretch out on the floor. Both have a non-slip backing, so the rug stays put on hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl, concrete or low-pile carpet. Below you will find a tour of the designs, the placement rules designers use for sofas and chairs, and a size guide for every corner of the room.

What You'll Find in Our Living Room Rugs

Think of this collection as a gallery you can walk on. The styles cover a lot of ground, so it helps to browse by mood rather than scroll from top to bottom.

Fine Art and Museum-Inspired Rugs

If your walls already hold framed prints, a fine-art rug carries the idea down to the floor. The Great Wave Rug recreates the towering blue wave of Japanese woodblock prints, and the Harbor Sunrise Rug borrows the soft brushwork of an impressionist seascape. Portrait lovers can choose the Pearl Earring Portrait Rug or the Baroque Pearl Portrait Rug, both painted in the deep shadows of the Dutch Masters, or the Enigmatic Smile Portrait Rug for a Renaissance classic. The Shell Venus Rug and the Divine Touch Rug bring a goddess and fresco hands into the room, and the Orange Scream Rug turns expressionist anxiety into a surprisingly cheerful wash of orange. Gold-leaf fans should look at the Golden Muse Rug, a Klimt-inspired Egyptian portrait, and the Gilded Mountain Mosaic Rug, while the Balloon Girl Street Art Rug and the Apple Man Surrealist Rug give a city apartment a gallery-district feel.

Modern and Geometric Designs

A modern area rug is the easiest way to add structure to a room full of soft cushions. The Primary Grid Rug follows De Stijl rules with black lines and blocks of red, yellow and blue, the Geometric Composition Rug takes its cues from Bauhaus posters, and the Art Deco Tessellation Rug repeats a sharp, interlocking pattern that suits brass lamps and velvet sofas. If clean lines are your thing, our abstract and modern rugs go much deeper into this style.

Botanical and Arts and Crafts Rugs

Pattern-rich botanicals are a favorite way to warm up a living room. The Strawberry Thief Garden Rug and the Berry Thief Tapestry Rug echo the birds-and-berries textiles of the Arts and Crafts movement, the Rose Trellis Songbird Rug frames songbirds in a garden window, and the Sunflower Poppy Field Rug brings a wildflower meadow indoors. For a moodier palette, the Fritillary Bell Rug and the Bleeding Heart Flower Rug set their flowers against dark backgrounds that look striking with deep green or navy walls.

Japanese and Asian-Inspired Rugs

Balanced, unhurried compositions make these designs a natural fit for a room where you want to slow down. The Mount Fuji Cherry Blossom Rug, the Mountain Temple Mist Rug and the Golden Bamboo Grove Rug read like landscape paintings with plenty of open space. Water lovers can choose the Koi Yin-Yang Pond Rug or the Sapphire Koi Pond Rug, a mosaic in rich blues. For bolder statements there is the Storm Dragon Rug, the Golden Peacock Throne Rug, the Wisteria Phoenix Rug and the Lantern Festival Rug, and folk motifs appear in the Daruma Doll Fortune Rug and the Kitsune Nine-Tailed Fox Rug.

Vintage Study, Mythology and Western Themes

Some living rooms double as a library or den. The Antique Globe Explorer Rug, the Antique Book Stack Rug and the Classical Marble Bust Rug suit leather armchairs and dark wood shelving, while Greek mythology appears in the Apollo's Lyre Rug, the Fall of Icarus Rug and the Poseidon's Trident Rug. If your style leans rustic, the Bronc Rider Rodeo Rug, the Prairie Bison Rug and the Cowboy Boots & Lasso Rug sit comfortably next to warm wood and woven throws.

Rock, Metal and Punk Rugs

More than 20 music-themed designs turn a listening corner or record shelf into a feature. Classic rock fans will find royal crest and drum-kit emblem designs, along with a psychedelic prism that throws a rainbow across a black background. Heavier tastes are covered by thrash metal crests with lightning bolts and eagles, and punk listeners get a presidential-seal parody and a horror-punk skull. One post-punk design, a set of stacked white waveforms on black, is minimal enough for an otherwise modern living room.

Gothic, Mystic and Romantic Designs

For a darker, more dramatic room, look at the Raven & Moonlight Rug, the Memento Mori Lace Hand Rug and the Skeleton Hands & Roses Rug. Tarot fans can choose The Sun Tarot Card Rug or The Hermit Tarot Card Rug, and the Hamsa Hand Evil Eye Rug places a protective symbol near the door. On the softer side, the Sun & Moon Lovers Rug and the Love Letter Wax Seal Rug make thoughtful gifts for a couple's first apartment. The Astronaut Helmet Galaxy Rug is a fun wildcard, and around a dozen anime-inspired designs round out the range.

How to Choose the Right Living Room Rug

A beautiful design in the wrong size or position can make a room feel smaller and more cluttered. These are the checks designers run before they buy, adapted to the sizes we actually offer.

Start With Measurements, Not the Design

Measure the whole room, then the seating group you want the rug to anchor: the width of the sofa, the distance from the sofa to the coffee table and the gap to any facing chairs. Note where doors swing, where floor vents sit and which lines people walk along to cross the room.

Next, mark the outline of the size you are considering with painter's tape and leave it for a day. It is the fastest way to see whether a 4 x 6 ft rug feels generous or lost. Keep walkways 30 to 36 inches wide, and leave a border of bare floor between the rug and the walls: 8 to 12 inches in a small room, 18 to 24 inches in a larger one.

Furniture Placement: All Legs On, Front Legs On or Floating

There are three classic ways to position a living room rug in relation to your furniture, and the right one depends on the size of your room and your seating.

  • All legs on. Every piece in the seating group stands completely on the rug. It gives the most unified look, but the rug must be larger than the whole arrangement; for a full sofa plus two armchairs that usually means 8 x 10 ft or more, which is bigger than our largest 5 x 7 ft size. With our rugs, all legs on works best for compact groupings: two accent chairs facing each other with a side table, a reading nook with one armchair and a floor lamp, or a small loveseat in a studio.
  • Front legs on. The front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug while the back legs stay on the floor. This is the most practical layout for most homes and the one we recommend for a 5 x 7 ft rug. Slide the rug 6 to 8 inches under the front edge of the sofa, then center the coffee table on it. Ideally the rug is at least as long as the sofa is wide; laid lengthwise, a 5 x 7 ft rug is 84 inches long, which roughly matches a typical three-seat sofa and runs past each end of a loveseat.
  • Floating. No furniture touches the rug; it sits in the open space between the seating, usually under the coffee table. This suits small rooms, a sectional pushed against the wall, or anyone who wants the rug to read as artwork. Leave a few inches between the sofa and the rug, and make sure at least 12 inches of rug show around the coffee table. A 3.3 x 5 ft or 4 x 6 ft rug is a common choice here.

Whichever method you choose, keep it consistent. If the sofa's front legs are on the rug, facing chairs should also have their front legs on it or sit clearly off it. A single leg perched on the edge looks accidental and can make a chair wobble.

Matching Color and Style to Your Room

With printed artwork, color matters more than texture. Pull one or two shades from the rug and repeat them elsewhere: a throw pillow, a vase, a print on the wall. The Great Wave Rug gives you indigo and cream to echo in cushions, while the Sunflower Poppy Field Rug offers golden yellow and red for a warmer palette.

Consider pattern scale next to your furniture. If your sofa is already patterned, a calmer composition like the Mountain Temple Mist Rug balances it out; if your furniture is plain, let the rug carry the drama with a portrait, dragon or peacock. Darker backgrounds disguise everyday dust in a busy family room, while lighter designs open up a small or dim space. Since the rug is often the first thing you see from the doorway, orient the design so it reads the right way up from the entrance or from the sofa, whichever matters more to you.

Traffic, Kids, Pets and Rolling Chairs

Living rooms take more foot traffic than almost any other room. The Standard Level, with its flatter 5 mm velvet surface, is quick to vacuum and the better pick for the main path between the door and the sofa. If your kids play on the floor or you like sitting on the rug for board games, the cushioned 7 mm Premium Level is noticeably more comfortable, and our non-toxic, skin-safe inks make either level fine for crawling babies. Pets bring hair and the occasional accident; blotting with a damp cloth and a regular low-setting vacuum keep the rug looking fresh. If your living room has a desk corner or a rolling chair, use the Standard Level there, because chair wheels roll smoothly over the velvet surface.

Open-Plan Spaces and Layering

In an open-plan room, rugs define zones without walls. Use a 5 x 7 ft rug to mark the seating area and a 3.3 x 5 ft rug for a reading chair, and leave the floor between them open so the space flows. If you have wall-to-wall low-pile carpet, you can layer a printed rug on top for color, since the non-slip backing grips low-pile carpet as well as hard floors. Two rugs in one room look intentional when they share a color or style family, such as a pair of Japanese landscapes.

Living Room Rug Sizes

All rectangular designs in this collection come in five sizes. Compare the table with the measurements and tape outline from your own room.

Size (ft) Size (cm) Best for
2 x 3 ft 60 x 90 cm Beside an armchair, by a balcony or entry door
2.6 x 3.9 ft 80 x 120 cm Reading nook, under a rolling or desk chair
3.3 x 5 ft 100 x 150 cm Floating under a coffee table, small apartments
4 x 6 ft 120 x 180 cm Front legs of a loveseat, compact living rooms
5 x 7 ft 150 x 214 cm Main living room rug, front legs of a full sofa

For a standard three-seat sofa, start with 5 x 7 ft laid lengthwise and tucked under the front legs. A loveseat or apartment-size sofa usually pairs well with 4 x 6 ft. For a rug that floats under the coffee table, 3.3 x 5 ft leaves a generous border around most rectangular tables. Beside an armchair or by a door, 2 x 3 ft adds color without crowding the floor. Under a desk chair or rolling reading chair, choose 2.6 x 3.9 ft or larger so all the wheels stay on the rug when you push back.

One design in this collection is a shaped rug, cut to the outline of the artwork rather than a rectangle. Shaped rugs come in four sizes, and because this one has a square-ish outline, it runs from about 80 x 80 cm (2.6 x 2.6 ft) up to 160 x 160 cm (5.2 x 5.2 ft). Exact dimensions are listed on each product page.

Standard vs Premium Living Room Rugs

Both quality levels use the same print process and both have a non-slip backing. The difference is thickness and how the surface feels underfoot.

  • Standard Level: a lightweight 5 mm rug with a shiny velvet surface that makes color and fine detail stand out, ideal for portraits and intricate botanicals. It has a faux leather non-slip backing and is our recommended choice under a desk chair, because the wheels roll smoothly across it.
  • Premium Level: a softer, cushioned 7 mm rug with a plush surface that feels comfortable when you walk barefoot, sit on the floor or let kids play. It has a natural cotton anti-slip backing and is designed for living rooms, bedrooms and kids' rooms.

A simple rule: choose Standard for entry zones, busy walkways and anywhere a chair rolls, and Premium where you sit, lounge or play. One combination that works well is a Premium rug in front of the sofa with a smaller Standard rug by the door.

Printing, Materials and Safety

Every rug is printed with HD sublimation, which bonds the ink into the fibers instead of leaving it on the surface, so the design won't crack or peel. The inks are UV-resistant for everyday daylight, although long periods of strong direct sun are still best avoided. Reinforced stitched edges protect against fraying and curling, which matters in a room where people step on the edges all day. The non-slip backing grips hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl, concrete and low-pile carpet, and the non-toxic, skin-safe inks make the rugs suitable for nurseries and playrooms. All of our rugs are designed for indoor use only.

Caring for Your Living Room Rug

  • Vacuum on a low setting or take the rug outside and shake it out.
  • Blot spills straight away with a damp cloth; don't rub.
  • For a deeper clean, hand wash with cold water and a mild detergent, then air dry flat.
  • Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and tumble drying, and do not iron the print.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so wear and daylight are spread evenly.
  • Your rug ships folded, so light creases relax within a few days once it lies flat.

Shipping and Returns

Each rug is made to order. Most orders are produced within 1 to 3 business days and delivered within 5 to 12 days depending on your location, with tracking sent by email. Because every rug is printed specifically for your order, we accept returns within 14 days for shipping damage or a defect, but not for a change of mind.

Living Room Rug FAQ

What size rug do I need for my living room?

Measure your seating area first. For a standard three-seat sofa, a 5 x 7 ft rug under the front legs is the most common fit. For a loveseat or compact room, 4 x 6 ft works well, and for a rug that floats under the coffee table, 3.3 x 5 ft is usually enough.

Should the sofa legs go on the rug?

It depends on the layout. All legs on needs a rug larger than the whole seating group. Front legs on is the most flexible option for our 5 x 7 ft size. A floating rug sits between the furniture without touching it, which suits small rooms. Pick one approach and use it for all the seating in the group.

Is Standard or Premium better for a living room?

Premium is softer and more cushioned, so it suits the area where you sit or play on the floor. Standard is thinner and flatter, easier to vacuum in busy walkways and the right choice under any chair with wheels.

Will the rug slip on hardwood or tile?

No. The Standard Level has a faux leather non-slip backing and the Premium Level a natural cotton anti-slip backing. Both grip hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl, concrete and low-pile carpet.

How do I clean a living room rug?

Vacuum on low or shake it out, and blot spills with a damp cloth. For a full wash, hand wash with cold water and mild detergent and let it air dry flat. Skip bleach, harsh chemicals and the tumble dryer.

Can I use two rugs in one living room?

Yes, especially in an open-plan space. Use one rug for the seating area and a smaller one for a reading corner, linked by a shared color.

Are these official band or franchise rugs?

No. These are original fan-inspired designs created by Padloom and printed on our own rugs. They are not affiliated with any band, artist, brand or studio.
