Blue scrollwork, cream lotus blossoms and leaping salmon fill the ivory ground around him, and the whole composition is laid out for the circle, ringed by a border of maroon and green panels.
A circle suits this piece because the figure sits dead center and every motif repeats around him like spokes on a wheel. It softens the corners of a square room and gives a bare patch of floor a quiet focal point. The mood is calm rather than loud.
