Product Description
Musashi stands at the middle of this Vagabond round rug, long hair lifting in the wind and a katana held upright beside him while cherry blossoms drift across an indigo sea. The artwork is laid out for the circle: a lobed medallion at the heart, then rings of swallows, blades and blossoms running out to a wave-crested edge. Ink-wash calm, no battle in sight.
A circle gives the swordsman room to breathe. It softens the hard corners of a square room, fills a reading nook without fuss and gives a bedside a quiet focal point. Because the pattern is symmetrical, the design looks right from every side of the room.
The Design: Indigo Waves, Pale Blossom
Ink-wash restraint drives the whole piece. The palette stays close to indigo, slate gray and warm cream, with blush pink saved for the blossoms so they glow against the blue. Inside the central medallion Musashi wears a patterned robe and a wave-embroidered hakama, and a pale moon sits behind him over a distant shoreline. Breaking waves in the ukiyo-e tradition crash up both sides of the frame.
Look closer at the surrounding ring and the small details repeat the story: swallows in flight, sheathed blades set on the diagonals, little boats on rough water, scallop shells at the top and bottom, and crescent moons at either side. Compass stars mark the four points.
