Some practical advice:

• S for the mouse only or for travel: compact enough for a laptop bag, with room for everyday browsing and office work.
• M or L for a mouse and a small keyboard: both are 30 cm deep, enough for a compact or tenkeyless keyboard beside the mouse. The L gives a little more width.
• XL or XXL for a full keyboard and mouse: the XL fits a full-size keyboard with a number pad, and the XXL adds depth so your forearms rest on the cloth.
• XXXL or XXXXL for whole-desk coverage: the best way to see a wide painting such as Great Wave Hokusai or Starry Night across the whole desk.

Measuring tip: measure your desk's depth and width and leave a few centimeters of margin on each side so the pad lies flat. Keep in mind that a keyboard will cover part of the image, so on smaller sizes an all-over design such as a pattern or landscape often looks better than one with a single central figure.

Which size shows the most of a painting?

The XXXL at 19.7 x 39.4 inches and the XXXXL at 23.6 x 47.2 inches show the widest view. For a full keyboard and mouse, the XL or XXL is the usual choice, and the S is enough for mouse-only use. Measure your desk first and leave a few centimeters of margin.
